The Mutty Professor was recommended to me by my neighbour. My terrier puppy was showing very early behavioural issues that I needed to tackle. Emily came to the house, took her time listening to me and assessing the situation. She set up six sessions to tackle the issues I was having. Emily‘s patience and positive training for both me and the dog were fantastic. I cannot recommend enough.

What we can train
Our puppy classes not only focus on training your puppy but also on educating you, the owner, to understand and communicate effectively with your new companion. With our support, you'll have all the skills and knowledge required to navigate puppy parenthood.
What you get
A Q&A meeting online is followed by five one-hour long practical training classes where puppy numbers are limited, so attendees get plenty of 1-2-1 coaching from the trainers present. A comprehensive puppy training manual full of information and video tutorials is also provided, as well as two webinars on dog body language and behaviour AND unlimited access to our training support group on Facebook. For those who want to keep the training going, you are invited to progress onto our outdoor classes for older dogs.
Where we can train
We do not want our classes to be full of barking puppies who are overwhelmed and struggling to listen to their owners. Training should start in a low distraction environment, so the first two online classes allow you and your puppy to practise in a low-pressure environment (your home). This gives you and your puppy a solid foundation before taking your training out into the big wide world. We also recognise that training needs to be generalised to lots of different environments- so our in person practical classes are held at a combination of outdoor venues in South Bristol.

Frequently asked questions
What skills and behaviours are covered in your puppy classes?
Our puppy class course helps you proactively prevent common puppy problems as well as teaching fundamental lifeskills. This includes settling in public places, walking nicely on lead, being comfortable with handling and grooming, recall, food and toy manners, dropping items they’ve picked up, ‘stay’ and a hand target (a way of moving your puppy easily without resorting to picking them up).
How experienced are the trainers with different puppies?
Our head of behaviour, Roz Pooley, has been running the puppy classes since 2013. During this time as well as in our work as Clinical Animal Behaviourists, there are few breeds or types of puppies or dogs that we have not worked with. Our classes have been featured in the 2022 book by Suzanne Rogers called ‘Canine Behaviour in Mind’ and Roz has even written a peer reviewed article on puppy socialisation for a veterinary journal. Roz’s team are all experienced and qualified in their own right, but are also mentored by her which promotes a consistent, team approach.
How do your classes cater to different puppy personalities and learning styles?
The in-person sessions are divided into small groups, so you get plenty of individualised coaching. Puppies have their own private training area that supports focus and building confidence, before engaging in carefully considered socialisation sessions at the end of each class.
You will also get the opportunity to ask us plenty of questions during the Q&A class that opens the course, as well as on our Client Support Group on Facebook. If you’re not on Facebook, we’re always available via email to provide support when you need it.
Can you describe the transition from online to in-person training in your puppy classes and its benefits?
During Covid, we noticed that our puppy class attendees in Lockdown at their homes achieved a higher standard of training. This lead to us creating a hybrid course that supports young puppies who are settling into their new homes, as well as building focus in highly social or excitable puppies, that may be easily distracted in the classroom. We start the course off with a Q&A session, followed by two practical training classes online before meeting on location. The training results and constant influx of puppies recommended to us by previous attendees speak for themselves!
